From time to time, we do things outside our collective comfort zone, just cause they sound fun.
This is one of those times.
Rick and I have been roleplaying… well, since we were kids. (Not together, of course, when Rick met Ari is another story, and we only go back about 13-14 years when it comes to gaming together.) So when this LARP experience came up, billing itself as a completely immersive gaming world- strategy, role playing, epic level down to the personal level, we were more than intrigued.. a phone conversation and we were all in.
What that means is we signed up to go to Bryn Mawr for a weekend and live as a fantasy character in the world of Dragon Thrones. Honestly, there’s no words that could have conveyed just HOW immersive it is- whatever your play preference or experience, there’s a level to accomodate it and stretch your imagination, sense of fair play, and teamwork.
You start with a character as a member of a House, and you have personal goals as well as team goals to achieve… which you can reach through diplomacy, questing/adventuring tabletop style, alone or with your team, or any other team open for party members. There are scavenger hunts, resources to be gathered, and, should you enjoy playing politics, power moves and alliances to build.
The scope of what the Dragon Thrones team has built is breathtaking. The flexibility and ease of use of the system enables a plethora of possibilities to live the story you want to live.
For a weekend, I was a Draconian Knight Mage, providing support and advice to the Empress Cresida and King Marduk as they ascended to exalted heights, kept our enemies at bay, and brought new draconic life into the world. I saw high adventure, true (politically practical) love, a God King rise and fall, mysteries unfold, and the world change.
It’s a far cry from data analysis, and I’m pretty sure we’ll be back next year, ready to be someone fantastic for a little while.

Edited to add- well, first, pics.
Secondly, after things like getting home and sleep and corgi cuteness, I read over what I wrote in that away from home, sleepless, corgless state.. and it’s still 1000% true. I’ve never had a role playing experience quite like it, and I’m ready to pack up my gear and head back at a moment’s notice. It was so much fun, a completely separate and unique world, no other gaming experience has come close.
And finally, the smile I got from Bree when I came home and settled back into our spot.
